Screening Breast Ultrasound

We are honored to have been one of a limited number of select sites in the U.S. and Canada (and the very first to be approved) to participate in an important research study evaluating ultrasound for early breast cancer detection in women with:
  • a high risk for breast cancer and
  • dense breast tissue on mammography.

A series of three yearly sonograms were performed at the time of annual mammography. The sonograms and mammograms were interpreted independent of each other to determine how useful each test is in finding early cancers.

Results from the first year of the study were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in May 2008. The addition of ultrasound to mammography resulted in the detection of 55% more cancers than with mammography alone (31 versus 20), as well as an associated increase in false-positives (biopsies that turned out to be benign).
